Around 296 BC, barbering was introduced in Rome and quickly became the place where gossip and news could be found. The first Barbers not only provided haircuts and shaves, but also tended to be the local dentists and surgeons. Though the first barber shop is no longer open, and the barbers gave up the medical chores, the tradition of the Old Time Barber being the centerpiece for local news and gossip continues in small towns and big cities throughout the United States even today! The Barber Shop is one of the last Service Industry businesses in the United States, where you can walk in unannounced and receive a customized haircut in minutes, whether a long time customer or as first time experience. Traditionally most customers of Old Time Barbers tend to stay with the same barber throughout their life, but for those that outlive their barber or find themselves in a new town for various reasons, a reliable barber is one of the first things a man seeks. The Old Time Barber website was developed to NOT ONLY create a single location for finding and providing vital information on traditional barber shops, but also to provide a lighthearted look at the personalities, traditions and unique qualities that make up the various barbers from Penny's Barber Shop in North Pole, Alaska to Floyd's Barber Shop in Key West, Florida. As stated in the top part of the website, the goal is to provide information on traditional type barbers. Since that definition varies from person to person, we are going to liberally define Old Time Barbers as those who provide a basic haircut for under $20 and accept walk in business. We may list some Barber Shops who's prices run over the $20 due to the uniqueness of their barber shop and a commitment to the traditional haircut. We currently have a database of 17,060 barber shops but the website is still in the early development stages. The current information on each barber shop includes name, address and phone number. In the coming weeks and months we will be adding additional information such as basic haircut price, hours of operation, number of barber chairs, year established, barbers first names, website links, directions and any other information that the barbers can provide. In the near future, the website will also provide special interest stories on various barber shops such as a "Barber Shop of the Week" and highlights on special awards or recognitions that communities bestow on their local barber shops. Another section will allow customers to rate their barber shop experiences. The website also wants to provide a central location for barbers to communicate with other barbers from anywhere in the country. A Bulletin Board has been created and can be found by clicking on the Barber Banter link. A few initial topics provide a place for barbers to sell memorabilia or to list memorabilia they are searching for on a Wish List. Other topics can be created as well by the barbers. Once again, please come back and check out the progress of the website as we try to make this a better site for both barbers and customers of Old Time Barber Shops. If you have any questions or ideas for the website, please send them to the address below, as we value your opinion.
